Northeastern University Regional Interpreter Education Center, U.S. Department of Education Rehabilitation Services Administration, Interpreter Training Program Grant #H160A-050002-05

Postsecondary Education Programs Network (PEPNet) - Northeast

Educational Level: Introductory, Intermediate, Advanced, Mentor
Target Audience:
Novice and working interpreters, including educational and faith-based interpreters, mentees, mentors, and interpreting students

Description:
This exciting, hands-on workshop focuses on the teaming process, with the goal of having each participant walk away with a greater understanding of who they are as a team member, what they bring to the team, what they need from a team and techniques for working towards a positive and successful teaming experience.

Join Lesley and Toni for teaming practice and analysis in a safe, supportive environment! Participants will work in teams interpreting short texts from sign-to-voice. The source text will be seen only by those interpreting, so participants can more easily focus on the teaming (rather than interpreting) process. Each team will be videotaped for later analysis.

If you have extensive teaming experience, that's great! If you have never worked in a team, that's great, too! Participants will have ample opportunity to work with various colleagues during this dynamic workshop!

About the Presenters
Lesley P. Garey
Lesley P. Garey, NAD V, NIC, SC:L, was born and raised in Toronto, Ontario. She graduated in 1996 from an ITP at Grant MacEwan Community College in Edmonton, Alberta. Combined with a diploma in Gerontology, she was employed at the Bob Rumball Center for the Deaf in Toronto, with a populace of elderly Deaf and Deaf-Blind residents. After immigrating to New Hampshire in 1997, she was an educational interpreter for the Manchester Program for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing and then spent five years as a full-time staff interpreter at a community mental health center. Those experiences prepared her for NAD V in 2000. She has since focused on the criminal justice field and commits her full-time schedule to interpreting in legal settings. Lesley has been involved in mentoring as both a mentor and a protege.

Toni Robbins
Toni Robbins, CI, CT, SC:L, was raised in northern New Hampshire and has Deaf grandparents. After graduating from an ITP in 1986, focusing on Educational Interpreting, Toni gained employment at the Portsmouth Program for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing where she interpreted for six years. Her years with the Portsmouth Program included interpreting for primary as well as high school students, including academia and extracurricular activities. After leaving the Portsmouth Program, Toni began working at Granite State Independent Living Foundation as a Staff Interpreter and Coordinator for the only Statewide Interpreter Referral Service. She left that position after six years to expand on her freelance practice. Toni has been a practitioner for twenty years with an emphasis on legal interpreting. She has been involved in mentoring, as both a mentor and protege.
